I have a 1999 Wrangler Sahara. I just noticed today that the skid plate for my fuel tank has a crack rusted through the bottom toward the front. The crack runs almost all the way across.

I dropped the tank about 4 years ago and remember there were some sort of straps that held the fuel tank to the skid plate. What I do NOT remember is if these straps went all the way around the tank. Do they support the tank even if the skid plate cracks all the way across the bottom????

I'd rather not replace the skid plate this time of year...middle of November in Minnesota. I just need to know if my fuel tank is still supported. The metal is still solid where the skid plate bolts to the Jeep and the tank straps are bolted.

Thanks.

The strap goes half way around the tank. The top half to be exact.

Basically the skid plate and the strap combo encircles the tank securing it in the place. It is the skid plate that holds the tank up in between the frame rail.

The strap basically holds the tank on the skid plate, so the tank won't bounce around.

If the skid plate is not moving around from how it is mounted and cracked, the strap should be able to hold the tank fine.

I cautiously will say that but you are the one to make the call it safe or not.
