[Install] Kilby Steering Skid Plate
Protect the steering gear box with a quality skid plate!
Introduction
 
If you look at the jeep from the front, you can see a round object on the driver side below the bumper. That is what steers your jeep and is exposed low underneath the bumper. The possibility of it hitting something and break is higher than the bumper itself when offroading. The breakage can seriously ruin your weekend. For that reason priced around $50, it is a cheap insurance.
There are many options to choose from when it comes down to steering skid plate for TJs. They are even priced similar. The reason I chose Kilby was because I can mount it with 3 different attachment points.; on the bumper, frame, lastly on the cross member. I think other skids mount two bolts into the bumper.
One thing that kind of caught me off guard was the packaging. When I opened box which arrived from Quadratec. The box was obviously opened before I opened it. You can see the return label on the last picture. It was returned and I received the returned merchandise without any notification. That is one bad customer service.
 
Tools and Parts Needed

Drill and 5/16" Drill Bit
Blue Thread Locker
Torx Wrench Large Sizes!

Warning!
You are dealing with steering component of the Jeep! You can seriously mess stuff up if you don't follow the simple instruction.
Procedure
1. First, make sure you got all the parts you need to complete the install. Get all the tools ready. You will need a drill and 5/16" drill bit.
 
2. Remove the bottom bolt that is holding the steering gear box. It is shown with Red arrow.
Kilby Steering Skid PlateKilby Steering Skid Plate3. Now the bolt is removed, place the steering skid plate and install the bolt all the way through. Do not tighten the bolt all the way down yet!! Make sure you use thread locker. You don't want this coming loose.
 
4. As shown here, remove the torx bolt from the front bumper and install the new supplied bolt along with the skid plate. Do not tighten the bolt all the way! Have the skid fit snug! Use thread locker.
 
5. Using the hammer and the center punch, punch a place where the drill can center itself. Otherwise your drill will move around all over the place and won't be safe for you to operate. The bit size is 5/16".
6. Install the supplied self tapping bolt to the hole you just have drilled. This very step took me a good 20 minutes. It is not easy to center the bolt in the hole when you are working under the Jeep.
 
7. Torque the steering gear box bolt to 70 ft.lbs using the torque wrench.
 
8. You are now done. Make sure you check the torque on the bolts after a few hundred miles.
